Girls or boys will love a tent canopy to play under, and girls may even want one to put over their beds permanently, but don't worry about expense. This tent canopy is so easy and inexpensive, you'll want to make another and another! And the best part is that it doesn't take long to make
it so the kids will be busy playing in no time.
An old hula hoop is perfect for this project, but if you don't have one, you can use many other things. Craft rings, a circle cut from a cardboard box, a hoop of wire - any of these things can be used to make the circle that will hold and shape the tent canopy.
Since you'll need a way to hold the circle in the air, so that you can form it into a canopy tent, it's best to go ahead and place it in the area where you will be keeping the it, whether it be a child's bedroom or the garage. Place a hook in the ceiling to hold the canopy, then use any number of methods to hold the hoop in place. Place wires on four different areas of the hoop, then attach the wires to the ceiling hook, or use twine, roping, or another method.
When the hoop is hanging from the ceiling it's time to start making it into a canopy tent. One cheap and easy way to do just that is to start with crepe paper streamers. You'll find the streamers, in a variety of colors, at any place that sells party supplies.
Cut the crepe paper into lengths that will reach from the ceiling to the floor. Cut many pieces - at least enough to go around the ring and cover it completely, then gather the ends of the pieces together and secure with a rubber band. Now wrap the rubber band in tape. Hang this gathered end on the hook in the ceiling.
Separate one streamer, bringing it down from the ceiling, and over the outside of the hoop. If you want, you can glue or tape the streamer to the hoop, or you can wrap the streamer once around the hoop. The tape or wrapping method will secure the crepe streamers to the hoop. Continue separating each streamer, then bringing it over the hoop, then allowing it to hang down to the floor. Make sure that a streamer covers each of the twine or wire pieces that hold the hoop, to conceal them.
You can add more and more streamers, so the canopy is more private, simply by taping a streamer to each existing streamer. Do this as many times as you like. Style the canopy in different ways, by cutting the ends into points, by adding shorter streamers here and there, or even by cutting
some streamers short, to form a doorway. Where the streamers meet the hoop, it's a nice look to add ties, ribbons, chains, or other embellishments, on the outside.
You don't necessarily have to use crepe paper streamers to make the tent canopy. Use strips of fabric, sheet, old ties sewn together, strips cut from trash bags, or strips cut from a plastic, rectangular tablecloth. There are many different things you can use, but fabric strips will last the longest. When using crepe streamers, though, it's easy to replace a ripped or missing one just by taping or stapling a new one in its place.
Your children will have hours of fun with the tent canopies and you won't believe how easy and quick they are too make. Best of all, the project is cheap and fun for all ages. Make tent canopies in male colors of blue, black or brown, or make colorful girls' creations of pink, white and purple. There's no set number of colors you can use together - make carnival-type creations, or simplistic designs of one or two colors. Most of all, have fun making the tents, then relax and let the kids play.
